He was drafted into the Army in December, 1943, mid-term of the senior year at Cuba High School in Cuba, Kentucky. He completed basic training in Oklahoma and arrived in Cherbourg, France in August, 1944, two months after D-Day, and participated in the Battle of the Bulge.
