Worked in the South Portland shipyards until he enlisted in early 1943 and served in the 483rd Battalion. Fought in the Pacific including the assault on Iwo Jima where he watched the raising of the flag on Mt. Suribachi through field glasses whilst under fire. He was discharged in 1946.
