Served proudly during WWII, having achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer (Radar Technician) in the U.S. Navy. He served for six years, with combat experience in the Pacific arena, primarily aboard the high-speed transport USS Pavlic (APD–70). On one reported occasion, the radar failed during battle. He climbed the mast to repair the radar antenna and is credited with saving the ship and crew.
