He joined the National Guard at age sixteen and was in for several years. He entered the U.S. Army on February 24, 1941 and was sent to Camp Kilmer, New Jersey; his first assignment, for a short time. His next assignment was Ft. Lee, Virginia and then on to Fort Bliss, Texas. He served in the Pacific area until the end of the war.
