Enlisted in 1941 as a Seaman, after leaving the Naval Academy early, and served aboard the USS Zircon, PY-16 on anti-submarine convoy patrol. Received a combat ribbon before Pearl Harbor after the Zircon encountered U-Boats. Transferred to the Navy Yard in Brooklyn, he was made chief illustrator of Sea Power Magazine, the Navy League publication. Discharged in 1946.
