Enlisted at age 17 in 1941. Served in the 532nd Anti Aircraft Artillery in North Africa and Italy. Then his unit converted to the 473rd Infantry Regiment and he fought as an Infantryman and marksman, earning a Combat Infantryman Badge, the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for merit.
