He volunteered to serve as a Private in the U.S. Army Air Forces on January 24, 1942 assigned to the 344th Bomb Squadron, 98th Group. He served primarily in North Africa and Italy from July 1942 through February 1945 in aerial combat bombing missions. He received the Air Medal on June 23, 1943 for aerial combat conferred by General Ent. He served successively as Private, Corporal, Sergeant,and Staff Sergeant during his first year of combat. Upon discharge, he returned to the United States in March, 1945.
