Drafted in 1939, He was assigned to the 9th Coast Artillery in Fort Dawes in Boston. Selected for Officer Candidate School in 1940, he was assigned to the Corps of Engineers. Sent to Britain in 1943, he fought in Europe as a Platoon commander of the 281st Engineer Combat Battalion. After the war he was assigned to rebuilding housing and railroads in Munich.
