He enlisted in the Navy in April, 1937 and following recruit training at Great Lakes, Illinois he attended Pharmacist's Mate School at San Diego, California and X-Ray Tech School in Washington, D.C. He served in the Pacific Theater of Operations aboard the Battleship USS Colorado (BB-45) which departed Pearl Harbor for Bremerton, Washington a few days prior to the Japanese attack December 7, 1941. He transferred to the USS Waterford (ARD-5) in July 1943 as a Chief Pharmacist's Mate, and later to the USS Monticello (LSD-35), and Mobile Hospital #5 through February 1944. He was also stationed at Memphis, Tennessee and Dublin, Georgia.
