Served in the 87th Mountain Infantry, part of the 10th Mountain Division in Italy. In February 1945 he led his squad on a night assault of Mt. Belvedere in the Po Valley. That night he saved his squad by deflecting live grenades. He received a battlefield commission and a Bronze Star for valor and the Combat Infantryman Badge.
