He entered service December 4, 1942. He served as a B-17 waist and tail gunner in the 407th Bomb Squadron of 92nd Bomb Group 'Fame's Favored Few' in the 8th Air Force, based in Podington, England. He flew on missions over France, Holland, Belgium and Germany. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 3 clusters, and the Presidential Unit Citation with 4 battle stars.
