He joined the service in November 1940, with the 137th Infantry and was at Camp Roberts when Pearl Harbor was bombed. After going to Officers Candidate School and was commissioned, he was assigned to the 123rd Infantry Regiment, 33rd Infantry Division, and was Executive Officer for Company K. He was badly burned as he protected the men of his patrol from a phosphorus grenade and had to be evacuated. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Purple Heart. He obtained the Rank of Lieutenant.
