He joined the Army National Guard on January 28, 1941, and was with the 123rd Infantry Regiment, 33rd Infantry Division through the New Guinea and Luzon Campaigns. He received a battlefield commission on May 20, 1945, for outstanding leadership as a Sergeant with Company E. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and Combat Infantryman Badge.
