He was commissioned on January 23, 1942, and served with the 123rd Infantry Regiment, 33rd Infantry Division. He was a Company Commander during the New Guinea and Luzon Campaigns. He was also the Regimental Adjutant and obtained the rank of Captain. His awards included the Expert and Combat Infantryman Badges, The Bronze Star Medal and the Legion of Merit.
