551st Engineer Heavy Pontoon Battalion. Enlisted April 1, 1943. He landed in France 4 days after D-Day. His assisted in building a Pontoon Bridge over the Rhine River in Maastricht, The Netherlands. He was on the last truck to leave Bastogne, Belgium, as the Germans mounted an attack. His unit was en-route to Berlin, then re-routed to liberate a concentration camp full of starving prisoners and to provide them with food.
