He enlisted right after Pearl Harbor at the age of 33. He chose to go in as an enlisted man. He crossed to France soon after D-Day, fought in Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge, crossed the Rhine into Germany, and went as far as Czechoslovakia before being pulled back due to the Russian advance. After V-E day he volunteered to fight in Asia, but the war ended before this could happen.
