He served as a Sergeant in WWII with the 100th Infantry Division (Century Division), 398th Infantry Regiment, Third Battalion, Company I, in the European Theater of Operations. Killed in Action, he was awarded the Purple Heart. He was also awarded the Silver Star Medal for Gallantry in Action; Bitche, France.
