He volunteered in the United States Navy. He served on the USS LST-491 and was a motor machinist's mate second class. He was an acting chief and had full command of half the ship. He participated in Operation Tiger and the invasion of Normandy on June 6th, 1944. For his service, he received the American campaign ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern campaign ribbon and the WWII victory ribbon.
