Served with 42nd Rainbow Division, part of the 7th Army. While defending a group of 6 cottages on the bank of the Moder River, Karltenhouse (east of Haguenau, France), the area was under almost constant artillery, mortar and machine gun fire. Another soldier in the platoon was severely wounded by a mortar shell and He stopped the blood flow on the arm wound, made a sling from wood scrapes, and eventually assisted the soldier to aid station through heavy enemy fire.
