He was an Army medic assisting wounded soldiers in the Battle of the Bulge. He was captured and was taken to a large Prisoner of War camp Stalag IX-B.He later send to Berga, a sub camp of Buchenwald, one of Germany's largest concentration slave labor camps, where he endured harsh treatment.
