He served as a Private First Class in WWII with the 100th Infantry Division (Century Division), 398th Infantry Regiment, First Battalion, Company C, in the European Theater of Operations. He was reported Missing in Action on February 5, 1945, and died near Wildenguth, France as a German Prisoner of War from injuries suffered during combat. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
