HE was ordered to a service school at Fort Meade in Maryland after Pearl Harbor and was transferred from Infantry to Transportation Corps in 1942. He became the Executive Officer of a Transportation Corps Officer Training School at Mississippi State College, and later transferred to Camp Plauche, New Orleans, then ordered to a railway training base at Camp Claiborne. After D-Day, HE WAS sent to France, Germany, Holland, and later Scotland as commander of a debarkation station. He suffered a decline in health after an injury sustained righting an overturned Jeep in Normandy.
