Served in the 9th Fighter Squadron (the Flying Knights) of the 49th Fighter group, beginning in Darwin followed by New Guinea and finally Biak Island before returning to the U.S. Worked as an aircraft mechanic and crew chief. For most of this time, the 9th flew the P-38 Lightening.
