He served as a Staff Sergeant in WWII with the 100th Infantry Division (Century Division), 398th Infantry Regiment, First Battalion, Company A, in the European Theater of Operations. He was a Prisoner of War and was detained by Germany from December 4, 1944, to June 9, 1945 at Stalag 4B, Muhlberg Sachsen. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
