He served in the 15th Air Command on a B-17 as a flight engineer and a top turret gunner. He flew 48 combat missions and was shot down over France and captured. He spent 8 months in a Prisoner of War camp. He was awarded the Air Medal 10 times, the Good Conduct medal and a Prisoner of War medal.
