He served as a Staff Sergeant in WWII with the 100th Infantry Division (Century Division), 397th Infantry Regiment, Second Battalion, Company G, in the European Theater of Operations. Wounded in Action, he was awarded the Purple Heart. He was also awarded the Silver Star Medal for Gallantry in Actin near Heilbronn, Germany.
