U.S. Navy Academy Class of 1942, but after Pearl Harbor accelerated to December 1941 with Commission as an Ensign aboard the USS Wasp. Served on convoy duty to Europe off Malta, then the Wasp was sunk off Guadalcanal where he was a Signals Officer. Picked up by a destroyer in shark infested waters, he barely survived a second torpedo attack. Reassigned to the USS Lexington, he was at Guam and Saipan and again hit by torpedoes and spent time in repair dock at Bremmerton, before fighting again in the Battle of the Coral Sea. Ended the war training as a pilot in Florida.
