He served in the 25th Division of the U.S. Army in Japan during WWII. He was training to become a paratrooper until he suffered an injury to his knee. He then entered the Motor Pool until he was sent in to fix a stove in the Army kitchen. While he was there, he fixed a breakfast for some Officers. They were impressed. After that, he was sent to Cook and Baker School and baked pies and pastries for the remainder of his time in Japan.
