In 1940, when he was 17, he went to Canada and received his wings with the Royal Canadian Air Force. In 1941 when the U.S. entered WWII, he returned to the states and joined the U.S. Army Air Forces. He was stationed in Pensacola, Florida for gunnery school. In 1943 he was shipped to Italy with the 777th Bomb Group. There he piloted combat missions in a B-24 aircraft, against German targets. He was a decorated pilot, one of the youngest ever to get his wings.
