Enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII immediately following his eighteenth birthday. As a Yeoman Third Class on the LST-532, he was part of the second wave to land on Omaha Beach in the invasion of Normandy. Later he was involved in ferrying German and Italian prisoners from France, and due to his language skills, was tasked with soothing their anxieties in the hold of the ship. He then worked with French navigators as a translator, to assist with passage around the uncleared mines in the Seine River.
