He was inducted into the U.S. Navy October 1942. He served aboard the USS Gilmer (PC-565). He and his shipmates escorted convoys and patrolled the U.S. coast line from Iceland to Trinidad and Tobago. On June 2, 1943 The PC-565 sunk a German U-boat (U-521) off the coast of Virginia. In March 1944 the PC-565 set sail for the European theater of Operations and served as a radio ship during the D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944. The ship spent the rest of the war in Europe before returning to the U.S. in October 1945. He was discharged March 12, 1946.
