He was too old to serve in the military during WWII. However, he served the war effort by working at an army base in the arsenal where he had a job testing machine parts. If parts weren't passing the level of quality expected, he would stop the conveyor. One time when he stopped the line, a colonel was making rounds through the arsenal and asked what was the problem. When he told him about the unacceptable quality, the colonel told him, "You and your sons are the type of people who will win this war."
