joined the service in 1943, choosing the Army Air Force. Because of his small size, he was perfect to climb into the back of B-25 aircraft as a tail gunner. He was sent to the Pacific Theater of Operations, where he flew on 46 bombing missions, fighting until the war ended in 1945. He was discharged as a Staff Sergeant.
