He was the left waist gunner on a B-17 of the 423rd Bomber Squadron, 306th Bomber Group (Heavy). while on a mission to bomb a German U-Boat base and shipyard at Sainte-Nazaire, France, they were shot down by enemy aircraft. All ten crew members were lost. He is memorialized at the Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, United Kingdom. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Air Medal.
