Enlisted in 1943, Rose to rank of Sergeant in 1944. He was with the 5th Engineer Battalion that served on Iwo Jima. This was the group that was supposed to invade Japan but was saved by the atomic bomb being dropped on Japan who surrendered. He stayed with the Battalion until it was deactivated in 1946.
