He entered the U.S. Navy on 27 March 1942 from Bradenton, Florida. He completed Quartermaster/Signalman school in Quantico, Virginia and was assigned to the Brooklyn Navy Yard where he participated in the commissioning and then served on USS PC-1235 (PC-class-461 submarine chaser) On 9 May 1944, PC-558 and PC-1235 were patrolling the region north of Palermo, Sicily. PS-558 was sunk by a German submarine (U-230) PC-1235 was fired at three times by U-230 and all three torpedoes missed their target. PC-1235 drove off U-230 and returned to rescue the thirty surviving crewmembers of PC-558. He stayed with PC-1235 until she was decommissioned on 26 October 1945. His final assignment was at the Harbor Entrance Control Post signal tower at the entrance of the Delaware River in Lewes, Delaware.
