He enlisted in the U.S. Army in November 4, 1942. After initial training at Ft McClellan and Fort Leonard Wood, he was attached to the 8th Infantry Division on January 1, 1943. His training continued in the United States in southern and desert regions before going overseas for further training in Northern Ireland. The 8th Infantry Division landed in Normandy, France in July 1944 and Louis participated in battle actions at La Haye du Puits, Rennes, Crozon, and Brest. He continued with combat operations as the Allies pushed through France and Germany (including Cologne) until March 1945 when he was wounded in action. After hospitalization and recovery he continued his Army service in France and Germany until he returned to the United States for discharge near the end of 1945. His military awards include the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
