Enlisted in the Navy on February 14, 1942. Went to boot camp at Great Lakes for 6 weeks and to Navy Pier for four months. Went to Honolulu and was sent to Barbers Point (Oahu), Carrier Aircraft Service Unit 2. Served on the USS Bunker Hill aircraft carrier as an airplane mechanic in the South Pacific. While serving on the USS Bunker Hill, the ship received two Presidential Unit citations and saw 11 major engagements. Returned to the states in 1944 to the Norfolk, Virginia Naval Air Station and was transferred from there to Carrier Aircraft Service unit 24 at the Wildwood, New Jersey Naval Air Station. He was honorably discharged on October 5, 1945.
