He served as a Private First Class in WWII with the 100th Infantry Division (Century Division), 399th Infantry Regiment, Second Battalion, Company G, in the European Theater of Operations. Wounded in Action, he was awarded the Purple Heart. He also received a Silver Star Medal for Gallantry in Action near Jagstfeld, Germany.
