He was a squad leader in Company G, 2nd Battalion, 134th Infantry Regiment, 35th Infantry Division. In the battle of the Flavigny Bridge-Moselle River crossing-he was wounded by a mortar round just east of Nancy, France on 14 November 1944 for which he was awarded the Purple Heart.
