He served as a Private First Class in WWII with the 100th Infantry Division (Century Division), 398th Infantry Regiment, First Battalion, Company A, in the European Theater of Operations. He was a Prisoner of War and was detained by Germany from December 12, 1944 to June 12, 1945. He was held at Stalag 3A and work camps (also Oflag 3-6) Luckenwalde, Brandenburg, Prussia.
