He served as a Staff Sergeant in WWII with the 100th Infantry Division (Century Division), 397th Infantry Regiment, Third Battalion, Company M, in the European Theater of Operations. He was Killed in Action, on November 23, 1944, near Saint Blaise, France. He was awarded the Silver Star Medal for Gallantry and the Purple Heart.
