He served as a Colonel and Regimental Commander in WWII with the 100th Infantry Division (Century Division), 397th Infantry Regiment, 397th Headquarters and Headquarters Company, in the European Theater of Operations. Killed in Action, he was awarded the Purple Heart. He also was awarded the Silver Star for Gallantry in Action, Neufmaisons, France.
