He served as a First Lieutenant in WWII with the 100th Infantry Division (Century Division), 397th Infantry Regiment, First Battalion, Company D, in the European Theater of Operations. Wounded in Action, he was awarded the Purple Heart. He also received the Silver Star Medal for Gallantry in Action near Heilbronn, Germany.
