Served as a paratrooper in E Company, 307th Airborne Engineer Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division. Made parachute jumps into Normandy and Holland. Earned the parachute badge with two stars, Good Conduct medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign medal with arrowhead, and four campaign stars. Unit awarded fourrageres to the French Croix de Guerre and Belgian Croix de Guerre as well as the Dutch Order of Willem.
