SERGEANT MAJOR. Assigned to Company K, 335th Infantry, 84th Infantry Division (The Rail-Splitters). Awarded a Battlefield Commission to Lieutenant AND the Silver Star Medal for gallantry against the Germans in Belgium (Brie/Grupont/Tellin) during the Battle of the Bulge. War weary and braving temperatures 13 degrees below zero, he saved the lives of 32 men in his platoon when surrounded by about 20 German tanks and enemy troops. Received the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Medal with three battle stars, Presidential Unit Citation, and the French Croix de Guerre.
