He entered the U.S. Army on 19 April 1943. He was sworn into the Army at the military induction center, Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas. He received basic training at Fort Polk, Louisiana then to Fort Campbell Kentucky for anti-tank and infantry training. He was then transferred to Camp Kilmer, New Jersey then to New York for transport to Liverpool, England. He was then assigned to the 11th Infantry of the 4th Division under the command of General George Patton's 3rd Army in combat. He was involved in the Battle of the Bulge. He arrived in the Rhineland on 16 November 1944. He saw combat in the Ardennes Forest, the Rhineland and the fall of Berlin. He was placed on a troop transport to New York on 13 July 1945. He was forwarded to Fort Sam Houston to be released with an Honorable Discharge. He received the following commendations: The Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Medal with 4 Bronze Stars, The World War II Victory Medal, the AR600-68A, Headquarters 11th Infantry Medal with 3 Overseas Service Stripes. He was proud to have served his country in its time of need.
