Activity During WWII

On March 24, 1944, he was inducted into the Marine Corps. From there he traveled by train to San Diego, California arriving at the U.S. Marine Corps Training Station. Following training camp he returned to Camp Pendleton where he was assigned as a company clerk typist to Company C, 5th Medical Battalion, 5th Marine Division. Late in the summer he boarded the U.S. Army Transport Etolin for Hilo, Hawaii. Upon landing, he went to Camp Tarawa on the Parker Ranch at Kamuela. The Marines were training for an unknown destination which later turned out to be Iwo Jima. Because of his clerical skills, he was left behind to keep records. After the bomb was dropped, he sailed for Sasebo, Kyushu for occupation duty. He spent time in Sasebo, Nagasaki and Kokura. In Kokura, he supervised the processing of discharge papers. He then boarded a ship for San Diego and was discharged.
