He entered the U.S. Navy via the V-12 program following completion of his junior year at San Jose State College. He served aboard the USS LST 655 from the time it was commissioned in March 1944 until the end of WWII. He was aboard during the invasion of Southern France as well as during many Allied operations in the Pacific including such places as Eniwetok, Guam, Saipan, Okinawa, and Leyte Gulf, and was at Ie Shima on V-J Day when the Japanese surrendered.
