After Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and received additional flight training at Fort Sam Houston, Texas and at the Spartan Air Force Training Detachment in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Then he earned his Pilot’s wings in Victoria, Texas, and after advanced fighter training in Florida, he was sent to Africa to fly P-39 aircraft, flying 17 missions and ultimately became the Squadron Commander. Thereafter in the European Theater of Operations, he flew 25 bombing missions in B-17 aircraft with 8th Air Force, and numerous fighter escort missions in P-38 and P-51 aircraft with the 37th fighter squadron. He was promoted to Captain before leaving the service.
